Plants Alive delivered the 18” collection, that I’d ordered last Thursday (7th Jan) fairly quickly (arrived Thursday 14th Jan). The snow and bad weather that the UK has been experiencing didn’t help much I’m sure. I was a little panicked about the cold weather affecting the live plants, however they arrived in very good condition.

Figure 2 – Planting information and the empty plastic bag shows that some of the leaves came off the supplied plants in transit (I was rinsing the plants in yellow bucket)

As you can see the plants are very juvenile and will become much larger as they grow so it was important to space them out. The tank looks sparsely planted at the present time, however it will look great in a few weeks/months as the plants establish themselves in their new home.

You may have noticed grey/whitish residue on the tank, this is caused by the hard water that I get out of my tap. It comes out the tap at pH 8, and is full of minerals that stick to pretty much everything in the tank.

Its all coming along nicely. Fish will go in, in the next week or so.

Just ordered some plants

The water is clear in my new tank, no fish to be seen, but I am keen to start aquascaping with a few plants.

I’ve been looking around for some decent quality, competitively priced plants for a few weeks, and I found what looks like an excellent online mail order aquatic plant company called ‘Plants Alive’.

The prices on their site really make the local fish shop and ‘Pets at home’ chain store prices look expensive in comparison.

I know very little about aquatic plants other than what they look like, so I thought it would be best to go for a collection of plants that will meet the background, mid ground and foreground requirements for my tank.

I ordered the 18” collection, as I am not overly keen to create an underwater rainforest, I am simply looking to add some greenery.

The 18” collection is 46 plants in total, broken down you get:

elodea_densa
5 off Elodea Densa

Aponogetum_Crispus
1 off Aponogetum (Aponogenton) Crispus

Eleocharis_Parvulus
5 off Eleocharis Parvulus (dwarf hairgrass)

mini_amazon_sword
10 off Mini Amazon Sword (Echinodorus Tennellus)

Bacopa_Monnerii
5 off Bacopa Monnieri (Monnerii)

Twisted_Vallisneria
5 off Twisted Vallisneria (Vallisneria americana / Mini twister / Vallisneria twisted)

Dwarf_Sagittaria
10 off Sagittaria Natans (Dwarf Sagittaria)

Rotala_Indica
5 off Rotalla (Rotala) Indica

All that for £5.45 + Postage and Packaging… bargain!

I can’t wait for it to arrive, and at those prices, I can use the ‘suck it an see’ approach to determine if my water / lighting will suit each species.
