Home My Tank Setting up Brown algae

Brown algae

E-mail Print PDF

Overnight the tank was taken over by brown algae!

This is quite commonplace in newly established tanks.

The internet is a wide and varied place… and because of this, it contradicts itself!

Shirlie Sharpe (about.com) suggests the causes are lack of light, excess silicates & nitrates and low oxygen levels

The tropical tank says it is down to nitrate and phosphate levels

Rate my fish tank claims it is down to too much light.

I will firstly, reduce the light and increase water changes… I may consider getting some Otocinclus if it gets really unmanageable.

No deb, there's no permanent air stone in the tank. Two T5 florescent bulbs (see the building my tank article). One T5 is for fish/humans, the other is designed for plants.
