Overnight the tank was taken over by brown algae!

This is quite commonplace in newly established tanks.

The internet is a wide and varied place… and because of this, it contradicts itself!

Shirlie Sharpe (about.com) suggests the causes are lack of light, excess silicates & nitrates and low oxygen levels

The tropical tank says it is down to nitrate and phosphate levels

Rate my fish tank claims it is down to too much light.

I will firstly, reduce the light and increase water changes… I may consider getting some Otocinclus if it gets really unmanageable.
